Although natural supplements and fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices can provide a large quantity of nutrients, whole foods should be consumed as well. Whole foods are natural foods that are unprocessed and unrefined or processed and refined as little as possible before being consumed. During the processing and refinement of whole foods, the fiber is usually removed. When whole foods are consumed, the body gets the benefit of both the nutrients and the fiber of those foods. Although fiber is generally not classified as a nutrient it is essential for the proper functioning of the digestive system and overall, the proper functioning of the body.
