inhibitors. Enzyme activity is also affected by temperature, ... Continue Reading

Why Nutrients Are Important
Nutrients are the nourishing components that make up a food. Without nutrients the human
body is unable to function at its optimal level. Some nutrients, called essential nutrients, are
required for the proper functioning of the body. Each nutrient plays a major role in the
prevention and healing of many illnesses and conditions. Although an adequate supply of
essential nutrients is required for good health, it's important to remember that other factors
can contribute to the occurrence of illnesses and conditions including genetics, aging, air and
water pollution, allergies, even stress. Some factors, including unknown causes of various
health conditions, are beyond our control. Consuming an adequate supply of essential
nutrients through natural food sources, decreases the risk of developing illnesses and
debilitating conditions. Nutrients from natural food sources can also help to heal illnesses and
conditions or relieve the discomfort associated with them. Consuming non-essential
nutrients along with essential nutrients is an added bonus for good health, since non-essential
nutrients also provide many health benefits.
Nutrients include vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fats, protein, carbohydrates, and water.
Although natural supplements and fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices can provide a
large quantity of nutrients, whole foods should be consumed as well. Whole foods are natural
foods that are unprocessed and unrefined or processed and refined as little as possible before
being consumed. During the processing and refinement of whole foods, the fiber is usually
removed. When whole foods are consumed, the body gets the benefit of both the nutrients
and the fiber of those foods. Although fiber is generally not classified as a nutrient it is
essential for the proper functioning of the digestive system and overall, the proper functioning
of the body. To learn more about the nutrients in whole foods, click on the Whole Food
categories located on the left side panel. Nutrient information about individual nutrients is
available on the Nutrients page. You can also read articles about individual nutrients through
the Nutrient Articles page.
